The Limbörgse Academie NGO Report (2015-2018) addresses the Dutch government’s refusal to implement the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML) for the Limburgish language. This non-compliance violates international law and Dutch legal provisions. The regional government, having few competencies to fulfill ECRML obligations, has traditionally relied on volunteer organizations instead of taking a proactive role. Recent negotiations for a Limburgish Covenant are promising, but a coherent policy with adequate funding is needed. Statutory impediments hinder Limburgish in education, culture, media, and administration. The report suggests more proactive promotion of Limburgish, aligning with ECRML obligations, and highlights the importance of digitization for minority languages.
